Fidelity and Charles Schwab form a consortium of market makers
In the next year or two, the platform might be available

Retail brokerage firms Fidelity Investments and Charles Schwab Corp. are teaming up with Citadel Securities and Virtu Financial Inc. to build a cryptocurrency trading platform.

According to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified discussing private plans, the market makers are collaborating with Fidelity and Schwab to develop a crypto offering that would increase access to digital assets. It may be available at the end of this year or early next year, the sources said.

In an emailed statement, Schwab spokeswoman Mayura Hooper said Schwab has invested passively in a new digital asset venture. Our investment strategy involves investing in companies and technologies offering access to cryptocurrency with a strong regulatory focus and in a secure environment."

Right now, the broker has no plans to offer direct crypto trading, but it will consider it when the regulatory environment is more clear, Hooper said.

The people said that plans may change based on future regulatory developments and market conditions. It was reported by CoinDesk earlier that Citadel Securities and Virtu were working together on this project.

According to Fidelity, 401(k) plan participants will be able to invest in bitcoin through its product in the next few months. Trading and storing virtual currencies is available through Fidelity Digital Assets, the firm's cryptocurrency subsidiary that was established in 2018.

Bettinger is also interested in crypto, according to Schwab's CEO. According to Schwab, the crypto market was hard to ignore in January because "a firm like Schwab is left with a tremendous void in that space."
