The Australian dollar strengthened on predictions of more aggressive rate rises as a result of data showing a sustained rise in inflation with no indication of a peak.

At 8.4% on an annualized basis, the Australian CPI came in higher than anticipated at a time when inflation is starting to show indications of sustained declines in other G20 countries. The COU data exceeded forecasts all the board, increasing the likelihood that the RBA will increase the rate rises going forward and drive the Aussie sharply higher. The AUD/USD currency pair surged above $0.7115 to a fresh 5-month high.

After hitting a fresh 9-month high yesterday, Gold's long-term bullish trend is still in place, while Copper has continued to sustain its current strong bullish breakout. Because higher prices are expected over the next few days, these assets are now appealing to long-term trend traders.

The publication of the Bank of Canada's monthly policy is anticipated by the markets later today. The Bank's overnight rate is anticipated to increase by 0.25% to 4.50%.
